January 8-14th Journal Entry

This was a good week. A weird week but a good week. Nathaniel got sick on Wednesday night and stayed home Thursday and that kinda threw us both off. I know he hasn’t gotten back into the swing of our newly formed routines and I am just barely holding on. We’re also prepping for our trip to New York this weekend and getting all of that settled is taking up a lot of space in our minds.

We’re leaving Springfield Thursday and coming home Sunday afternoon. We’re going to see Phantom before it closes in February (or whenever it is closing now, they keep pushing it back). But, while we’re there, we’re going to pack as many things in as we can. It is January though so we’re trying not to be outside the entire time we’re there but we probably will be.

I’ve been working on costume stuff for The Color Purple this week as well. I’ve almost finished gathering the men’s costumes minus their accessories and their jackets. It’s the women I’m worried about. To find dresses and skirts/shirts that are in the color pallet, period, and fit people is surprisingly (non surprisingly) difficult. My current discovery is that the theatre doesn’t have as many female shoes as I expected them to have. I’m looking for classic female character shoes that every actor has. Since this is a cast mostly of people who have never done theatre before, I’m assuming no one has character shoes so I’ll need to buy them. Who knows though, I own several pairs of shoes that could be considered character shoes that I wear normally. I’m planning on asking this weekend.

I finally finished the Pikachu head that’s been sitting in my house for months this week. In late September, I was asked to work on a mascot pikachu head. I said yeah sure since I can usually figure out how to fix things. I sat down with this head and everything I tried to stick the breaking foam seams back together made it worse. So, because I was intimidated by it, it sat in my dining room for literally months. Periodically I would try another type of glue or another type of way to stick seams together, but nothing worked well enough to fix the whole head. Finally, a week ago, I stuck a piece of duct tape on it to hold a seam while it was gluing and I realized “Noel, why haven’t you just taped this whole thing?” So I did. If you take the soft fabric cover off this head you’ll see a pikachu skull totally wrapped in duct tape. The tape doesn’t stick amazingly to the foam but it does stick to itself so I figured out ways to keep the seams together. I’m honestly just proud he’s finished.

My spiritual life was a little rough this week. It was busy and with Nathaniel sick our routines were thrown off. That’s no excuse but it is the cause. The plan is to continue to lean into routine and schedule and rituals so that it isn’t an option of will power. I love being able to apply human behavior theory to the different stress points in my life. If I rely on my will power in the moment of a decision to do something or not, I 9/10 am not powerful enough to overpower my human nature to choose the path of least resistance. However, my relationship with God is the most important thing in my life and if I truly believe that my actions and behaviors need to show it.

Until next time.
